Intense Match of Wits Between Dr. Hannibal, Will Graham Continues With 13 New Episodes

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — Dec. 19, 2013 — NBC has announced it will premiere the 13-episode second season of the critically acclaimed drama “Hannibal” at 10 p.m. (ET/PT) Friday, Feb. 28 following “Grimm” after the previously-announced conclusion of the 10-episode run of “Dracula.”

From creator Bryan Fuller, “Hannibal” stars Mads Mikkelsen as brilliant psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lector, who is working with the FBI and gifted criminal profiler Will Graham, played by Hugh Dancy, to look into the mind of serial killers. Based on Thomas Harris’ best-selling novels, this series is the prequel to the story that began with the feature films “Red Dragon” and “Silence of the Lambs.”
The series also stars Laurence Fishburne as Jack Crawford, the head of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit. Caroline Dhavernas and Hettienne Park also co-star.

“Bryan and his team are running on all creative cylinders once again and have delivered episodes full of intrigue, scares and surprises,” said Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment. “The show continues to astound us with its incredible aesthetic beauty and its amazingly talented cast.”

Vulture.com rated “Hannibal” as the second best show on all of television — broadcast or cable — in 2013, calling it “a daring series,” and adding “This is the most visually and atmospherically striking network series since “‘Twin Peaks.’” The Chicago Sun-Times added that “Hannibal” is “deliciously disturbing and is bound to leave viewers hungry for more.”

TV critic Alan Sepinwall of HitFix.com said “Hannibal” had an “amazing first season of television.” The New York Post said, “The series is the most beautifully shot and produced show on network TV.”

“Hannibal” is from Gaumont International Television in association with Sony Pictures Television Networks.

The series is also produced by Dino De Laurentiis Company and Living Dead Guy Productions.
In addition to Fuller, Martha De Laurentiis, Steven Lightfoot, Chris Brancato, Katie O’Connell, Elisa Roth, Sidonie Dumas and Christophe Riandee also serve as executive producers.

When Hannibal returns for its second season, Will Graham will be in quite a bit of trouble.

Arrested and locked up for grievous crimes he never committed, Will (Hugh Dancy) needs a top-notch lawyer to help him regain his freedom. In steps Leonard Braver.

With such a high profile case, Braver is hoping that the proceedings could make his career, according to E!. Also, with such a strong case against him, no one else would want to touch his defense with a ten-foot pole.

However, Will knows he has been set up by Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen), a carefully plotted deception that Will began to figure out in "Savoureux." According to series creator Brain Fuller, this moment of realization regarding Hannibal's character had to happen early in the shows intended seven-season arc.

"Because the audience knows from the first frame, before Hannibal is even onscreen that we are telling the story of Hannibal Lecter, who is going to be caught by Will Graham and incarcerated, Will had to figure Hannibal out in the first season," Fuller told the A.V. Club.

While Braver works to get Will released, the show writers will have to deal with having their protagonist locked up.

"That's the great thing about imagination is that Will's imagination can transport him out of [prison] and into places, cinematically, that will allow him to continue being a pivotal part of the story, even though he's locked up," Fuller said, according to the A.V. Club. "One of the things that was really interesting in the books, is the concept of Hannibal's memory palace, the place where he goes to survive incarceration with the virtual-reality system that exists between his ears. We'll be seeing Will create his own version of the mind palace over the course of the second season."

With that statement, it sounds like it will be quite awhile before Will breaths free air again.

Exec producer Bryan Fuller revealed Thursday at Comic-Con that the crime series’ second season will return in a two-parter followed by a trial in Episode 3. “We have the season arc crafted, and it’s a doozy,” Fuller teased to a packed ballroom. “We just finished breaking Episode 3, and we are breaking Episode 4 now.” The Season 2 openers will act as a pseudo pilot, Fuller said, reintroducing characters who now find themselves in much different places. “Will knows something no one else knows, and it’s a great place to put a character,” Fuller said. “One of the things I was most excited about in Season 2 was seeing Will Graham hit rock bottom.”

The recap was a reminder of how Hannibal routinely depicts some of the most extreme graphic kills on broadcast TV. Fuller says network suits rarely object. Except on the Season 1 episode “Coquilles,” in which a killer mutilates his victims into angels to watch over him in his sleep. “We had two people who were nude and we saw their buttocks,” Fuller said. “They were dead, they were flayed open, and cracked in many ways. Their butt crack was the least offensive of the ones they were sporting, [but] the network said no. … I asked why, because of the exposed spine and muscle tissue and flayed skin? I said, ‘What if we fill the butt cracks with blood so you can’t see them?’ They said OK.”

Fuller & Co. spoke often and fondly of Red Dragon, the 1981 novel by Thomas Harris that Hannibal is adapted from, joining numerous films (The Silence of the Lambs, Manhunter, Red Dragon) that feature the famous Dr. Hannibal Lecter character. “I was going back to that book until the day we finished shooting,” said Dancy. “I read it a couple of times and tried to let it be in the background.” Slade, whom De Laurentiis announced will direct more episodes, wants to film the book’s real ending into the show’s future. Absent co-star Mads Mikkelsen also got love from the panel. “He screen tested because he was not so well known,” said De Laurentiis of the Danish actor, who at the time was most familiar to stateside audiences for Casino Royale. “But I think he really owns the role now.” Fuller described the take on Lecter that won Mikkelsen his vote. “It was about finding an actor who had a specific take on the character,” said Fuller. “He said he didn’t want to play Anthony Hopkins or Brian Cox. He wanted to play Satan.”

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — May 30, 2013 — NBC has given a 13-episode second-season renewal to its critically applauded drama “Hannibal.” The new season will air no earlier than midseason.

“Hannibal” is based on the characters from the novel “Red Dragon” by Thomas Harris and was developed for television by Bryan Fuller, who also serves as writer and executive producer.

The announcement was made by NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke.

“We’re so proud of Bryan’s vision for a show that is richly textured, psychologically complex, and very compelling,” Salke said. “There are many great stories still to be told.”

Critics have strongly embraced the series. Alan Sepinwall of Hitfix.com said “Hannibal” “is the last of this season’s serial killer shows. It’s also, by a very wide margin, the best.” Jeff Jensen of Entertainment Weekly called “Hannibal” “finely acted, visually scrumptious and deliciously subversive” while Matt Roush of TV Guide said the show is “feverishly twisted, fascinatingly macabre and visually remarkable.”

The series stars Hugh Dancy as expert criminal profiler Will Dancy, who has a unique ability to peer into the mind of serial killers. Mads Mikkelsen stars as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a psychiatrist who is helping with the cases and, unbeknownst to Will, is also a serial killer himself.

Laurence Fishburne stars as Jack Crawford, the head of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit. Caroline Dhavernas and Hettienne Park also co-star.

Through its eight original telecasts to date, “Hannibal” is averaging a 2.0 rating, 6 share in adults 18-49 and 4.7 million viewers overall in “most current” results from Nielsen Media Research. ”Hannibal” is the youngest drama on ABC, CBS and NBC, with a median age for its audience of 45.7. It’s also an upscale drama, indexing at a 111 among adults 18-49 living in homes with $100K+ incomes (with 100 indicating an average concentration of those homes).

Additionally, “Hannibal” is heavily time-shifted, with its 18-49 rating growing by 75% going from next-day “live plus same day” ratings to “live plus seven day” results.

In addition to Fuller, Martha De Laurentiis, Jesse Alexander, Chris Brancato, Sara Colleton, Katie O’Connell, Elisa Roth, Sidonie Dumas and Christophe Riandee also serve as executive producers.

The series is produced by Gaumont International Television, Dino De Laurentiis Company and Living Dead Guy Productions, and co-commissioned internationally by Sony Pictures Television Networks.

"I talked to Lee Pace about doing a role on [Hannibal] this season," Fuller reveals. "But he was doing a stage play and so we're planning to work that out with season two. He's definitely interested in doing the show and I would love to work with him again. I also very much want to work with Anna Friel again, and Kristin Chenoweth clearly has to play someone in the Boston arts scene. Perhaps an opera singer. So we are hoping to make that all happen."

Of course the bigger question is whether Hannibal will indeed score a second season. Airing up against ABC's ever-growing Scandal (a social-media beast) and CBS' solid Elementary, Hannibal has fought tooth and nail (and so many other gory body parts) to hold its own in an extremely challenging timeslot. Fuller says he hasn't been told anything yet regarding the show's fate (NBC's full fall slate will be decided by May 12) but adds, "I know that we are a cost-efficient show so we're not hard to pick up. That's a nice way of saying we're a bargain show! (laughs) Hannibal was really well-produced, we have a fantastic team and our crew in Toronto was just knocking it out of the park."

We can't imagine NBC not keeping this kind of feature-film-quality series around. (And by the way, all the awards for Hugh Dancy. And upcoming guest star Gillian Anderson.) But if the show does get cancelled? Prepare for complete and utter devastation, Hannibal fans. "It ends on such a huge cliffhanger," Fuller admits. "It's a big ending where you're like, 'Oh my God, what is going to happen next?!' So our viewers will be screwed if we don't have a second season."

Bryan Fuller is looking for a pretty big name to join "Hannibal" in Season 2. Zap2it can reveal exclusively that the "Hannibal" showrunner plans to reach out to David Bowie for a major role if NBC gives a second season the green light.

"I guess my dream casting for the show would be to cast David Bowie as Hannibal Lecter's uncle," Fuller tells Getty Images Entertainment, courtesy of Zap2it. "If we get a second season I will reach out and see if there is any interest."

Bowie clearly has a love for Hannibal Lecter's storyline, as he attended the "Hannibal" movie premiere back in 2001. For those of you hoping this casting pans out, Fuller says things are looking pretty good.

"NBC are saying that they're very happy with where we are at so I hope that indicates towards a second season because I have a plan for Season 2 that I think would be very exciting," Fuller reveals. "I actually have story arcs through Season 7. I think seven seems about right."

Though it will take several seasons to get there, Fuller would like to incorporate some of Hannibal Lecter's most famous tales into the NBC show several years down the road. The planned end of the series is still far off, but Fuller would like to one day introduce a "Clarice Starling type character" to help Will hunt Hannibal down.

"In the first season we have this weird bromance between Will and Hannibal, season two is the nasty break up and the third season would have a fugitive angle to it, the fourth season would be 'Red Dragon,' the fifth season would be in the realm of 'Silence Of The Lambs,' the sixth season would be 'Hannibal,'" Fuller says.

He continues, "In the seventh season it would be interesting to see Will Graham and a Clarice Starling type character come together for an adventure with their nemesis, Hannibal Lecter."

As for whether the series will end with a movie, Fuller says, "I would not mind that at all." Hopefully he can get to that "Pushing Daisies" movie first.

David Tennant could play a ''seriously deranged'' serial killer in new series 'Hannibal'.

The 'Broadchurch' actor - who played a police detective in the crime drama - will switch sides in the forthcoming show, which is based on 1991 thriller 'Silence of the Lambs', after impressing show boss Bryan Fuller.

He said: ''I love David Tennant. He would have made an amazing Hannibal, there's no doubt in my mind.

''David is such a fantastic actor that I would love him to come and do the show as a seriously deranged serial killer. That would be amazing.''

David initially auditioned for the lead part of psychopath Hannibal Lecter - who was portrayed by Sir Anthony Hopkins in the movie - but he narrowly lost out to Hollywood star Mads Mikkelsen.

The Danish actor will appear alongside his good friend Hugh Dancy - who is to play special agent Will Graham in the series - and Bryan is looking forward to seeing the chemistry between the pair unfold in front of the camera.

He is quoted by the Daily Star newspaper as saying: ''Mads already had a friendship in real life with Hugh.

''This show is about a bromance and a friendship that goes horribly wrong. So we thought it would be interesting to take advantage of their chemistry as friends.

''It felt like a true, traditional way to cast the role.''

ANNE Curtis is “speechless” over the prospect of making a cameo appearance in an American television series, which recently premiered in the Philippines.

The 28-year-old Kapamilya actress got the approval of Bryan Fuller when she was suggested to appear in a cameo role in the second season of the US series “Hannibal,” which was developed by the American screenwriter and television producer.

Curtis was mentioned to Fuller on micro-blogging site Twitter on Thursday by Joyce Ramirez, who heads Manila-based public relations firm Publicity Asia (PR Asia).

The publicity network is responsible for the local promotion of “Hannibal,” which recently aired its pilot episode in the Philippines via the cable channel AXN.

In an interview this morning Hettienne Park told watchers to look for “tips of the hat” to great directors Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch. Wanting to be loyal to the Hannibal Lecter film series “Hannibal” is based on, you can also see numerous clues (in a Kubrick style) hinting at events yet to come  that are portrayed or referenced in the movies.

Park also said the show has been sold internationally and has already been granted a second season.
