DigitalSpy: 'Hannibal': Bryan Fuller talks the horror drama's cult castings

"A lot of it is just my wish fulfilment - my checklist!" Fuller laughed. "It was kind of about being near great minds and great talents that I'd admired, so it was like... who inspires me as a writer? All these people have been very influential on my entertainment experience.

"So the casting on the show has been a lot of fun, just to see people that are intrigued by the world and the character of Hannibal Lecter... because it can be divisive. People can be like, 'Oh, Hannibal Lecter, there's been so many movies…' and what's been great is, people get that we're trying to approach... each of the episodes as an elegant horror movie.

"I think these actors responded to what we're trying to do and just got it, in a way that not everybody has. I am a geek at heart and I love all of the movies and the television shows that these people have been in, so I just wanted to access what they can bring to the table."

First up in our look at Hannibal's cult castings is Gillian Anderson, who plays Lecter's "icy" psychiatrist, one Dr Bedelia Du Maurier...

"Of course, I was an X-Files fan!" Fuller enthused. "It was all I could do not to pull out my camera to get a picture with her because I wanted to maintain some modicum of professionalism!

"Gillian comes with such a pedigree of quality genre television and is a fantastic actress. What I loved about her is she has this icy sexiness to her and Mads Mikkelsen [who plays Hannibal] has this icy sexiness to him, so to have these two icy, sexy people in a psychological setting where they're talking about very intimate things… it just vibrates!"

"Eddie Izzard is, I think, one of the most brilliant minds of our generation," Fuller said. "He's less of a stand-up comedian and more of a philosopher - he doesn't tell jokes, he talks about ideas and explores concepts… he is like Socrates on the street corner, espousing his ideas to whoever will listen."

English comedian and actor Izzard - who previously teamed with Fuller on the Munsters reboot Mockingbird Lane - appears on Hannibal as Abel Gideon, an inmate at the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane - the very same facility where Lecter himself is eventually incarcerated..

Another cult vet signed for a Hannibal guest stint is Lance Henriksen - the 72-year-old's past credits include such sci-fi and horror classics as Aliens and The Terminator, but it was his performance in 1987's offbeat vampire movie Near Dark that made the strongest impression on the mind of a young Bryan Fuller...

"I'd seen Near Dark dozens of times, so I wanted to work with Lance Henriksen," he explained. "He's Bishop in Aliens, he's Jesse in Near Dark - he has this fantastic genre CV that was all the staples of my adolescent obsessions!"

The details of Henriken's character on Hannibal are being kept tightly under wraps, but in closing, Fuller did provide the Week in Geek with a few hints as to what we can expect...

"He's fantastic and creepy!" the showrunner promised. "It's like if Jesse from Near Dark got older!"

TVFeedsMyFamily.blogspot: SET VISIT: Hannibal has plenty of promise

http://tvfeedsmyfamily.blogspot.ie/2013/03/set-visit-hannibal-has-plenty-of-promise.html?spref=fb

The prequel to the Silence of the Lambs films is wrapping its first 13 episodes in a converted warehouse studio in Mississauga, Ontario. The series has a unique broadcast blueprint; each season, should it advance, will consist of 13 episodes. It's a network show built on a cable plan. The series is set to premiere April 4.
Some local press, as well as a number of international journalists, were invited to tour the set Sunday and speak with the stars.

On set: the Feds finally caught up with me
The series is well cast. Hugh Dancy--married in real life to Claire Danes--stars as special agent Will Graham, a somewhat damaged college prof who has an ESP-like sensitivity when it comes to crime solving. He's brought into the FBI to help the head of Behavioral Sciences, played by Laurence Fishburne, track Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
If you thought Anthony Hopkins was unforgettable in this role get set for Mads Mikkelsen's take. The Danish actor, brilliant as a Bond villain in Casino Royale, plays a younger Lecter in this prequel to the movies.

Everybody's Wonderfalls crush, Caroline Dhavernas, plays another FBI consultant with connections to Dancy's character. They were all at the press deal Sunday and everybody seemed relaxed and friendly.

Hannibal's food stylist showing off her lungs
Judging from the first hour of the series, they should also feel confident. Hannibal is dark, scary and damn good, a much more coherent and engaging drama than NBC/Sony International's last shot-in-Mississauga effort, The Firm. Scott Thompson is also in the cast as a forensic crime scene specialist, and Fishburne says he keeps the cast in stitches. Gillian Anderson adds more marquee value later in the season as Lecter's shrink.

Reporters were led through the standing sets--Lector's large, Gothic, Baltimore-based library/is impressive--and eventually gathered in the creepy character's kitchen. There the food stylist grossed us out with her nasty recipes for the show, many involving bones, bird skulls and cow lungs dripping is blood sauce. She uses actual cow lungs and revealed that they can last up to two hours before having to be packed back in the freezer.

Eddie Izzard guest stars on Hannibal
Mikkelsen was asked what food grosses him out. "Headcheese," he said. Good answer.

He also said he's been too busy to participate in any of the 50th anniversary of Bond exhibits and regretted missing the one downtown at TIFF. Fishburne says he gets recognized on the streets of Toronto and, yes, even by Cowboy Curtis fans from his long ago stint on Pee-wee's Playhouse.
Dahvernas talked wistfully about one year wonder Wonderfalls, which, shockingly was shot ten years ago. The producer of Hannibal, Bryan Fuller, was the creator of that delightful fantasy-drama shot in and around Toronto and Niagara Falls. Dahvernas says Fox did everything they could to derail it, dumping it into Fridays and messing up the episode order. What is she watching these days? Nothing--Dahvernas doesn't have a TV set!

Facebook: Episode 6 title revealed

Episode 6 is currently entitled "ENTRÉE"

As announced by Entertainment Weekly last week, the brilliant Eddie Izzard will guest star on Hannibal, playing an inmate at the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane -- the facility at which Hannibal Lecter is eventually incarcerated. Look for Eddie's character, who claims to be "the infamous Chesapeake Ripper," to make his appearance on Episode 6, entitled "Entree." #EatTheRude

A Note on "Entrée"

An entrée is a dish served before the main course.

Entrées are mentioning in three of the Thomas Harris' novels:
=========================================

In "Red Dragon"

Seven hundred miles to the southwest, in the cafeteria at Gateway Film Laboratory of St. Louis, Francis Dolarhyde was waiting for a hamburger. The entrées offered in the steam table were filmed over. He stood beside the cash register and sipped coffee from a paper cup.

In "The Silence of the Lambs"

Jame Gumb took three TV dinners from his microwave oven. There were two Hungry Man dinners for himself and one Lean Cuisine for the poodle. The poodle greedily ate her entrée and the dessert, leaving the vegetable. Jame Gumb left only the bones on his two trays.

In "Hannibal Rising"

Hannibal was trying to forget his lunch at school, an entree known as "Martyr's Relics," and he examined the bills of fare with keen interest as he passed. Soon he hoped to have the funds for a birthday dinner, and he was looking for sea urchins.

Eddie Izzard to guest star in Hannibal

Eddie Izzard (wonderful actor, mad charity marathon runner and hopefully the future Mayor of London) is guesting in Hannibal as an inmate at the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane (the same facility where Hannibal Lecter is eventually incarcerated). Izzard’s character is claiming to be “the infamous Chesapeake Ripper.”

Izzard recently starred on NBC in another Bryan Fuller project, starring as Grandpa Munster in Mockingbird Lane.
