Katie O’Connell talks to TBI Vision
The US arm of [Gaumont International Television] is also launching a second scary title next year and is currently in production with Hannibal, written by Pushing Daisies’ Bryan Fuller, which was ordered straight to series by NBC.
The fact that a major broadcast network has commissioned a 13 episode series based on Silence of the Lambs’ Hannibal Lecter is revealing.
Gaumont’s CEO Katie O’Connell says that the series is more of a psychological thriller with ‘Hitchcockian’ suspense rather than a slasher flick. “It’s elegant horror with wit,” she says. “We are doing the show for NBC not FEARnet.”
“Historically there was a little bit of resistance; if a show was too scary the networks wondered if people would watch it and also whether you can hold the suspense on TV,” says Chiller’s Vitale. “Now producers and broadcasters have figured out how to make shows on commercial TV that are character based. It’s not about the gore or the killing, it’s not just about the slasher, it’s about the relationships and the characters.”
