Latina.com: Gina Torres On Being Afro-Latina in Hollywood, 'Hannibal’ & More! By Jesus Trivino

On NBC’s Hannibal you portray your [real life] husband’s, Laurence Fishburne, wife. Is it difficult to work with your husband?

It’s great. When we’re home, we’re a married couple. When we’re on set, we’re actors and we’re working. We understand each other and have a great deal of respect for each other and for each other’s work. I was talking to our director, Guillermo Navarro, and he said, “You know, this is really weird.” I said, “What’s weird about it?” and he said, “Usually when I work with spouses, they’re competitive and the two of you are not competitive at all, you’re respectful and you support each other.” And again it’s that thing that I get to work with Laurence Fishburne. What actor in their right mind does not want to work with Laurence Fishburne? He is phenomenal, warm and gifted, and so that’s what I get to do.

Gina Torres Digitial Spy Interview

"I've read the scripts, I've seen the first episode and... it is chilling," the actress told DigitalSpy. "NBC is really doing something beautiful and smart, and they're pushing those boundaries."

"It is scary, it is creepy, it is heartening... and this cast that they've assembled - Hugh Dancy, Laurence Fishburne, Mads Mikkelsen - they're really quite a trio."

"The fanbase is two-tiered - there are the fans of the books, who are rabid fans and their expectations of how it might be realised on-screen are very high, and then you have the die-hard fans of the movies," she acknowledged. "I don't believe that either type of fan will be disappointed."

TVLine: Gina Torres is Phyllis "Bella" Crawford

Gina Torres, star of Cleopatra 2525, Alias, and Firefly, has been cast as Jack Crawford's wife, Phyllis "Bella" Crawford, who has a big impact in The Silence of the Lambs.

Their meeting is described in The Silence of the Lambs:
"They had met in Livorno, Italy. He was Army, she NATO staff, and she was Phyllis then. They walked on the quays and a boatman called "Bella" across the glittering water and she was always Bella to him after that. She was only Phyllis when they disagreed."

It is worth mentioning that the events of The Silence of the Lambs won't occur
within the timeframe of the seven seasons of Hannibal. In The Silence of the Lambs
Hannibal says he has been incarcerated at the Chesapeake State Hospital for the
Criminally Insane for eight years, and this incarceration will start at around the end of
Season 2 or start of Season 3 of Hannibal (assuming each season corresponds to
one year).

Gina Torres previously worked with Bryan Fuller as grifter Lila Robinson on Pushing Daisies. She will juggle this recurring role with her full-time job on USA Network’s Suits.

This is brilliant casting not only because Gina Torres is a fantastic actress,
but she is also married to Laurence Fishburne (Jack Crawford) in real life:
